Diwali as a Harvest Festival


The festival of Diwali marks the end of harvesting time. In this time period, farmers get the outcome of their hard work in the form of healthy crops. Production time bears commencement of prosperity and a healthy life for all the farmers. Farmers offer prayers to goddess Lakshmi for the well being of their harvest and near and dear ones.
The celebration commences on the next day of Diwali. Various food items are prepared, farmers decorate their houses with flowers and earthen lamps, decorations are also put on the boundaries of their farming land. Amongst the food items Poha Pava is the most special dish that is prepared and offered to the goddess Lakshmi as prasad. This festivity of the commencement of the harvesting season holds the beliefs of many and is overwhelming in its own way.
October and November are the months specified for the Kharif season. The Kharif season has a close connection with Diwali , as Diwali always falls during this time.
This festival reflects the rich Indian culture, and there is always so much to look forward to i.e. the celebrations, decorations, presents, puja etc. Farmers start the preparations for the celebrations with the first day of the five day festival i.e. Dhanteras. They decorate their homes and their farm land with flowers and rangolis.
Sweets are an integral part of the festival, Kala Kand, Boondi Ladoo, Rice Kheer are the most favorite. Farmers make earthen lamps themselves at home, yet they are beautiful. Festival fairs are the main attractions, which are set up by farmers themselves; many tourists come to see the beauty and grace of the celebration styles in the different parts of the country.
Diwali is the festival of lights and brights up every one’s life with happiness and prosperity through out the year. Farmers are especially excited for this festival in the hope that Ma Lakshmi will shower blessings on them and their produce. It is very important for them as they are the ones who are responsible for crop production from beginning to the end till the crops get sold in the market ; almost every individual in society is depending on them. It is very important that the quality of the crops is good and they grow more and more every year to earn more and uplift their lifestyle.
Diwali illuminates the positive vibes and increases the happiness flowing in the life of every individual. It takes away the darkness of sorrows and problems and replaces it with hope. This festival teach us to enjoy every single little moment and forget and forgive the past, start a fresh and light up the new commencement of life with a smile.
